The Children of Cambodia presented a wish concerning the opening of the adoption from Cambodia to Finland to Aulikki Kananoja, the executive director of Social welfare agency in Helsinki, Finland. The Children of Cambodia organization has provided the department of family affairs of the Social welfare agency with information concerning Cambodian laws on international adoption and informed them about the country's current status regarding adoption and orphanages.
The above mentioned presentation was well received, and 11. February 2002 the adoption board of Finland decided to start cooperation with Cambodia.
The organization has also negotiated with the Cambodian authorities in Phnom Penh concerning the matter. Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the interior have expressed their willingness to co-operate.
In addition to Finland, Cambodian authorities are already functionally working with France, Canada, Singapore, Holland, Italy and England concerning international adoption. As a result of the co-operation with the western countries, the Cambodian law of adoption has been formed such, that it is compatible with the Finnish adoption law.
In the future The Children of Cambodia organization will continue to work together with the organisations arranging adoptions.
